LEGAL JARGON

I just got a certified letter in the mail from a local personal injury attorney – I’m being sued.  I can’t understand too much of the legal jargon contained within the body of the letter, but from what I gather, someone in the neighborhood suffered an injury because of my neglect.  It mentions something about broken sidewalk blocks that led to a trip and fall which resulted in some pretty serious and extensive injuries.  The person apparently had a trip to the hospital and is in for what could be several months of physical therapy for rehabilitation.  The lawyer will be seeking reimbursement for the medical bills, the physical therapy, lost wages and pain and suffering.  The funny thing about all of this is that I don’t remember anyone coming to the house to say that they had fallen, I don’t remember seeing any notes or receiving any phone calls and I also don’t remember any blood on the sidewalk or hearing any ambulance sirens.  I would have thought that if the injuries were as extensive as the lawyer claims in the letter that someone would have remembered seeing any of this.  I also didn’t see and broken or disrupted sidewalk during an inspection of my property so I think I’ll contact a lawyer of my own since this whole thing sounds a bit fishy to me.
