PRECUSER OF THE CIA
Jim and I were talking in the parking lot after the support group meeting. We were all surprised at the Governor being there. I tossed my bag of lancets in the car, and then Mr. Callahan came over. The three of us talked for awhile, and Mr. Callahan mentioned that he went to school with the Governor's grandfather. He was a number of grades ahead, but he knew him back in the day. Mr. Callahan also knew the Governor's father. His father actually worked for Mr. Callahan at one time. Mr. Callahan ran an intelligence division within the Army during World War II. Mr. Callahan is 95 years old, and he once worked for the OSS, the precursor of the CIA. The Governor's father was at first a code breaker, but then he was parachuted, along with Mr. Callahan, behind German lines in occupied France. This was all very interesting to me, but not to Jim. He wanted to get home. He said the grass needed cutting. I continued to listen to Mr. Callahan's story. It seems the Governor was awarded the Silver Cross, which is the second highest medal that you can win next to the Congressional Medal of Honor.
